In 2024, although we paid a total £347 million in Group Protection claims – which is nearly £1 million a day, we went beyond, by delivering meaningful impact.
Through our focus on cancer care, mental health, and overall wellbeing, our group income protection prevention, early intervention, and vocational rehabilitation services helped employees stay healthy, recover faster, and return to work when applicable. The result, stronger businesses and healthier employees.
Key Highlights of the value from our Group Income Protection in 2024:
- 188,000+ health and wellbeing interactions — a 20% increase from 2023.
- 4,226 vocational rehabilitation assessments — enabling nearly 8 in 10 employees return to work.
- 74% of employees were able to return to work within the deferred period.
- 78% of employees were able to return to work within the first year of absence.
Prevention in action
We saw a significant rise in proactive health engagement, with over 188,000 interactions across its health and wellbeing services — up from 150,000 in 2023. Many of these services span across all our Group Protection products and are designed to help employees stay healthy and in work.
Rehabilitation and return to work
Our Group Income Protection in-house team of Vocational Clinical Specialists delivered 4,226 assessments in 2024, offering tailored support and referrals to multidisciplinary partners. This helped:
- 74% of employees were able to return to work before we began any claim payments.
- 78% of employees were able to return to work within 12 months of absence.
Specialist support included: psychiatry, physiotherapy, pain and fatigue management, cancer and neurological care.
