Our 2025 group protection outcomes

In 2025, we paid over £396 million in Group Protection claims – that’s over £1 million paid out each day. However, we go far beyond just paying a claim. 

Through our focus on cancer care, mental health, and overall wellbeing, our group income protection prevention, early intervention, and vocational rehabilitation services helped employees where appropriate; stay healthy, recover faster, and return to work when. The result, stronger businesses and healthier employees. 

Key Highlights of the value from our Group Income Protection in 2025: 

  • 231,000+ health and wellbeing interactions, a 23% increase on 2024
  • 5,007 vocational rehabilitation assessments — enabling 9 in 10 employees to return to work. 
  • 81% of employees were able to return to work within the deferred period. 
  • 89% of employees were able to return to work within the first year of absence. 

Employees using our EAP have benefited from a

  • 25% increase in life satisfaction  
  • 13% average increase in work engagement

Prevention in action

Our Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) has provided: 

  • Over 30,000 interactions with employees, which were supported by qualified counsellors from the start  
  • Just under 6,000 counselling sessions. Where relevant, for employees covered by our group income protection, they could be supported by up to eight structured counselling sessions.  
  • 9 second response time to calls. If employees need support, they can be confident that there are qualified counsellors on hand to help.  
  • 30 minutes average call length. Meaning employees are getting comprehensive support in the moment. 

Employees using our EAP have provided their employers with a:  

  • 21% reduction in presenteeism (continuing to work, when not well)  
  • 24% reduction absenteeism and workplace distress 

Return to work performance

In 2025, our active intervention provided to employees covered by our group income protection, enabled: 

  • 968 employees to return to work within the deferred period 
  • 273 further employees were able to return to work following a period of benefits and with the help of our active intervention 
  • 1,968 psychological and physiotherapy treatments were also arranged and paid for by us

When the unexpected happens to an employee, our cover can help ease the financial challenges. Where possible, we provide fast claims payments to help towards easing the financial worries families may face.

  • Over £82 million paid in claims
  • Average payout of £22,610 per year
  • 90% of employees with mental health conditions were able to return to work within the deferred period
  • 81% of all Group Income Protection claims were returned to work within the deferred period.
